The World's War
While "World War I" conjures up images of European and American forces battling in muddy trenches, the conflict actually lived up to its name; the colonial powers made a more extensive use of African, Indian, and Southeast Asian soldiers than is commonly known. Featuring 32 pages of illustrations, this companion to the 2014 BBC documentary is David Olusoga's panoramic overview of some of the war's most vital yet least-known theaters, which also reveals the deep seated racism that sometimes influenced military decision-making on who would serve and where, often putting colonial soldiers at greater risk. Here too is an account of how the contributions of these troops were unjustly forgotten after the war.
